In this powerful workshop involving rocks, apple slices, mandalas, sprigs of sedum freshly snipped from the garden and six minutes of guided meditation, we learned first-hand how mindfulness can benefit us and our classrooms. Sending Them Back to the Well: The templates that Kelly has been using in her classes since adopting the practice of ‘slowing down, turning fewer pages, and engaging learners more deeply’ are available on her website at www. Feel free to use and edit them as you see fit. The tables even had candles and mints for the ‘daters. One attendee commented, “Robin was on fire tonight. The hands-on workshop was well attended and, in spite of less than perfect cooperation from the internet server, garnered positive feedback from many who came. It is only the second class of the school year, and she already has her students speed dating in Anishinaabemowin, or Ojibwe. Chacaby started the speed-dating exercise about 10 years ago. The exercise is an icebreaker to loosen up her students—the majority of whom are not Indigenous—and get them talking.

We love to create new and fun ways to practice Spanish while learning more about the local culture. Thanks to Jaume, non-native students learn dating topics and expressions in Spanish in a 45 minute lesson before the Spanish natives arrive. This class covers important topics, like conversations topics to avoid, personality traits, hobbies and interests, as well as fun and interactive game to practice with the other students.
As a must, tinto de verano flows through LAE Madrid during cultural activities, making the cultural activity the perfect environment to learn while enjoying the night. Jaume gives students dating pointers After class, the speed dating begins. LAE Madrid speed dating is more of a social, where everyone is able to stand, drink, mingle and switch to the next date when Jaume rings the bell.
Everyone in the room speaks Spanish, which makes it an amazing opportunity to improve your language since it is a real-life situation. The Spanish natives are very patient with those students who may not have their language polished quite yet, so the night is very comfortable.
Colby Sharp My fourth graders are spending some time these last few weeks of school building their to-read lists. I have heard about book speed dating from multiple people on Twitter the last two years. As long as kids are getting the opportunity to preview and talk about lots of different titles, book speed dating serves its purpose. I place a giant stack of books at each table group.
When selecting books for book speed dating I try to find titles that: Are in a series that not many students know about New titles Books that I am surprised not many students have found during the year Favorite authors that my kids are not reading Blume, Dahl, Cleary, etc.
Nov 22, · The students quickly picked up on the fact that what we were doing was just like speed dating. I’m not sure how they know about speed dating, but I said I guess you could call it speed dating if you wanted to and they got a big kick about who all was “dating” who during the test review.
Even President Obama has chimed in. And yet it also leaves me wistful, even melancholy. Once upon a time, knowing how to use a computer was virtually synonymous with knowing how to program one. John Kemeny shows off his vanity license plate in Adrian N. Kemeny and Thomas E. In the s and early s, when home computers came along, BASIC did as much as anything else to make them useful. Especially the multiple versions of the language produced by a small company named Microsoft.
I happen to have been born less than a month before BASIC was, which may or may not have anything to do with my affinity for it. Kemeny died in But thinking of its invention as a major moment only in the history of computer languages dramatically understates its significance. In the mid s, using a computer was generally like playing chess by mail: You used a keypunch to enter a program on cards, turned them over to a trained operator and then waited for a printout of the results, which might not arrive until the next day.
You told the computer to do something by typing words and math statements, and it did it, right away. In many ways, that era of instant gratification began with what Kemeny and Kurtz created.

Introductions and icebreakers; receiving feedback on new ideas; helping students identify partners or teams for group projects How to: Give students a list of questions or prompts–either ahead of time or during class–to respond to e. A place for sharing fresh ideas about teaching high school math. Monday, November 22, Speed Dating I promise this is really about math I got this idea from Kate Nowak over at f t and I had been wanting to use her idea for one of my test reviews this year. I did change it quite a bit but I am sure she will recognize it as her original idea. I have been trying to come up with a creative way to review for tests this year for each and every single test. It has been a chore, but with a little help from my friends in the edublogging community, I have managed to pull it off.
When students arrived in my class this morning, the desks were arranged in pairs so that the desks were facing each other. I had 6 pairs in each row for a total of 15 stations. I told them to sit wherever they wanted and they naturally sat with their best friend, but it was no big deal, because they would not be sitting there long. I passed out the test review which I had prepared in advance. It had about 24 problems on it. As we began the review, I told the partners to work and gave them 5 minutes.
I started my timer and walked around the room giving assistance. After five minutes, I showed the correct solutions, let them fix anything they missed and then told them that one person from each group would now be rotating to the next set of desks.
Back in , I wrote a post called ” Beg Borrow, and Steal: Basically, you give the students a chart with numbers or fewer, as I did below , then the teacher calls out numbers, and the students color them in. At the end it makes an image. The students have a blast trying to figure out what it is as they’re coloring! Basically you give students a list of questions, and they answer for themselves and then predict how their partner will answer.
The partners then share answers and see who’s a better guesser!

Sep 9th, Posts: It’s called ‘Speed Dating‘ and is basically exactly what it says on the tin. It lasted about 40 minutes with me, and that will depend on the size of your class, ability, etc. Start off by making sure everyone knows what ‘speed dating‘ means. So this is how you do it There are 14 character cards you will need to make more if you have a larger class ; 7 girls and 7 guys. Shuffle them up and hand them out so each student has a card – male characters don’t necessarily have to go to the boys, and vice versa!
The aim is for each person to find their ‘perfect match’.
